Everything here went in over the same few years, so it is all aging at the same rate. The original front-yard planting is now well past the size it was chosen for, so shrubs picked to sit under a window are over it. The paver driveways have picked up the black staining that pavers always pick up in this climate, and no amount of hosing shifts it. And a lot of the beds we see have had the mulch topped up rather than actually replaced for years, which is why it has gone gray and stopped holding any moisture at all.

The water matters too. A lot that backs onto a lake has a bank to plant and hold rather than a fence to stop at, so the edge wants to be built deliberately instead of left to find its own line.
